February 16th 2008 - Winter Raptor Tour
Raptors put on quite a show for the nine people that went on the Raptor Field Trip on February 16. The trip was led by Rodger & Ginger Shoemake.
On McDonald Road every phase of red-tailed hawk was present including both dark morph and Harlan's. They were seen soaring above catching thermals, hunting along the ridges, perching on poles and sitting on the ground. Northern Harriers skimmed the top of the fields looking for rodents and kestrels kited above the ground. There was a pair of great horned owls on Short Road and another pair on Byrnes Road. Also on Byrnes Road was a Prairie falcon, another Harlan's hawk, and rough-legged hawks in addition to more red-tail hawks, harriers and kestrels. It was fun day watching winter raptors.
